FSSAI Registration Types: Basic, State, and Central License Explained

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulates the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import of food products in India. Any business involved in food operations must obtain an FSSAI license or registration based on the scale and nature of operations.

Basic FSSAI Registration: This is for small food businesses with annual turnover up to Rs. 12 lakh. It includes petty manufacturers, small retailers, hawkers, temporary stall holders, and home-based food businesses. The registration is valid for 1-5 years and requires minimal documentation.

State FSSAI License: Required for medium-sized food businesses with annual turnover between Rs. 12 lakh and Rs. 20 crore. This includes medium manufacturers, transporters, storage facilities, retailers, and restaurants operating within a single state. The license is valid for 1-5 years.

Central FSSAI License: Mandatory for large food businesses with annual turnover above Rs. 20 crore. It also applies to importers, exporters, food units in central government agencies, railways, airport operators, and businesses operating in multiple states. Central licenses require more extensive documentation.

Documents Required: For all types, you need identity proof, address proof, business ownership documents, food safety management system plan, list of food categories, and premises layout. For manufacturing units, additional documents like water quality report and machinery list may be required.

Application Process: Submit Form A (for registration) or Form B (for license) online on the FSSAI portal. The application is reviewed by the designated officer, and a physical inspection may be conducted for manufacturing units. The license or registration certificate is issued upon approval.

Renewal: FSSAI licenses and registrations must be renewed before expiry. Late renewal attracts a penalty of Rs. 100 per day. The renewal application can be submitted up to 120 days before the expiry date. Axaon offers end-to-end FSSAI application and renewal support.

Operating without FSSAI registration or with an expired license can result in penalties up to Rs. 5 lakh and imprisonment for the responsible officer. Regular compliance includes maintaining hygiene standards, proper labeling, and adherence to FSSAI packaging regulations.
